Calvin Hofer

Calvin Hofer serves on the faculty of the Music Department at Colorado Mesa University. He previously served as Head of the Music Department and Director of Bands, as well as conducted the CMU Wind Symphony. He is the former principal trumpet in the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and the CMU Faculty Brass Quintet, as well as trumpet instructor at Rushmore National Music Camp. Professor Hofer is the founder of CMU’s annual Best of the West Music Festival, which grew from a one-day event of 40 high school students to a two-day festival with over 220 participants. As a conductor and performer, he has been in the solo cornet section in the Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band and the Yankee Brass Band (based in New England), which specializes in performing on period instruments, and has conducted and adjudicated bands in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Iowa. He has conducted the world-premieres of works by John Mackey, David Gillingham, Eric Ewazen, Karl Boelter, Carolyn Bremer and Michael Markowski.

Professor Hofer is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the National Association for Music Education, the International Trumpet Guild and the Colorado Bandmasters Association.

Professor Hofer served as member of the NASM Commission on Accreditation from 2014–2020. He also previously served as Secretary and Vice Chair of Region 3.

Professor Hofer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from South Dakota State University, a Master of Music Education from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas.
